A Journey Through Time and Healing: Checking Into 'The White Octopus Hotel

 Hey Bookworms!

Today, I'm absolutely thrilled to be talking about a book that's been on my radar, a truly enchanting and melancholic read that sweeps you away to a magical setting: "The White Octopus Hotel" by Alexandra Bell. If you're drawn to stories that blend historical fantasy, time travel, and deep emotional healing, then you're going to want to pack your bags for this one!

The Premise: Where Time Bends and Hearts Mend

Imagine a grand, dilapidated Belle Époque hotel nestled high in the Swiss Alps, rumored to hold extraordinary magic. A phone that lets you speak to the dead, a clock that tells more than just time, and a writing tablet capable of sending messages into the past. This is the White Octopus Hotel, a place that holds
the key to a second chance for two lost souls.

Our story primarily follows Eve Shaw, a reclusive art appraiser in 2015 London. Haunted by grief and guilt over a past tragedy, Eve finds herself inexplicably drawn to the abandoned hotel. As she steps through its crumbling doors, she's not just entering a ruined building; she's stepping back in time to 1935, just before the hotel's infamous "Last Party."

Here, she encounters the handsome and traumatized young music composer, Max Everly, a man still reeling from the horrors of WWI. Both Eve and Max carry their own heavy burdens, but within the magical, time-bending halls of the White Octopus, they discover an impossible connection and the potential for love and healing. The question is: can they brave the hotel's unpredictable magic and their own pasts to seize this chance?

Why This Book Captured My Heart

Alexandra Bell has crafted a truly unique and beautiful story. Here's what made "The White Octopus Hotel" such a memorable read for me:

  • The Enchanting Setting: The White Octopus Hotel itself is a character. Its mysterious, time-warped nature and the hint of forgotten glamour create an atmosphere that's both eerie and utterly captivating. You can practically hear the echoes of past parties and feel the dust of decades.

  • A Love Story Across Time: The connection between Eve and Max is tender, poignant, and beautifully developed. Their shared experiences of trauma, despite living in different centuries, create a powerful bond. It's a love story that feels earned and deeply moving.

  • Themes of Healing and Forgiveness: At its core, this book is about confronting grief, processing trauma, and finding the courage to forgive yourself and embrace the possibility of a brighter future. The magical elements serve not as a distraction, but as a catalyst for profound emotional journeys.

  • Magical Realism with a Purpose: The fantastical elements – the time slips, the peculiar artifacts – aren't just for show. They are woven intricately into the narrative, serving to push the characters forward and illuminate their internal struggles. The "octopus imagery" subtly hints at deeper meanings, from entanglement to regeneration, adding another layer of depth.

  • Hope Amidst Melancholy: While the book tackles heavy themes of loss and the scars of war, it maintains a hopeful tone. It reminds us that even when life is hard and grief feels overwhelming, there's always the possibility of enchantment and transformation.

Final Thoughts

"The White Octopus Hotel" is a wonderfully imaginative and deeply emotional novel. It's a testament to the power of love, art, and the enduring human spirit. If you're looking for a book that's a little different, a little magical, and incredibly heartfelt, then I highly recommend checking into this fantastical Swiss Alps retreat. Just be prepared to lose yourself in its winding halls and the timeless love story within.

I was so excited when I got approved on NetGalley to read an Arc copy of "The white Octopus hotel." One of my favorite arc's every I can not wait to by a physical copy. Release date for this amazing book October 28, 2025.

My Rating: 5 Stars - A truly whimsical and captivating journey!

Stepping into Royal Intrigue: A Review of Ana Huang's 'Twisted Games'

Hello, fellow book lovers! 👋

After diving deep into the passionate chaos of "Twisted Love," I'm back with the next installment in Ana Huang's sensational Twisted series: "Twisted Games"! This book pivots from the intense Alex and Ava to a whole new kind of forbidden romance, and let me tell you, it's just as captivating.

If you're a fan of royal intrigue, steely bodyguards, and a slow-burn romance that simmers before exploding, then you're in for a treat with this one.

What's "Twisted Games" All About?

"Twisted Games" brings us the story of Bridget Von Ascheberg, a modern-day princess burdened by duty, and her new, unyielding bodyguard, Rhys Larsen. Bridget is the epitome of grace and responsibility, preparing to take on a significant role within her European monarchy. Rhys is the complete opposite: stoic, formidable, and absolutely no-nonsense.

Their relationship starts purely professionally, fraught with tension due to Rhys's intense protectiveness and Bridget's need for independence. However, as they navigate royal duties, political machinations, and forced proximity, a powerful and forbidden attraction sparks between them. It's a classic bodyguard-falls-for-the-royal trope, but Ana Huang elevates it with her signature blend of slow-burn tension, high stakes, and undeniable chemistry.

My Thoughts: The Slow Burn, The Stare, and The Sparks

The Ultimate Slow Burn 🔥 If you like your romance to develop gradually, building exquisite tension with every shared glance and forbidden touch, "Twisted Games" delivers! Rhys and Bridget's relationship is a masterclass in delayed gratification. The anticipation of them finally giving in is almost unbearable – in the best way possible!

Rhys Larsen: The Silent Protector 🤫 Oh, Rhys. He's the quiet, observant type who speaks with his actions (and those intense stares!). He's incredibly protective, fiercely loyal, and has a hidden softness that only Bridget can bring out. He's the kind of hero who makes you feel utterly safe and completely desired. His unwavering devotion to Bridget is truly swoon-worthy.

Bridget: More Than a Princess 👑 Bridget is an incredible heroine. She's not just a pretty face or a royal title; she's intelligent, kind, resilient, and surprisingly strong. Watching her navigate her royal duties while fighting her feelings for Rhys, and eventually embracing her true self, is incredibly satisfying. Her journey is about finding her voice and her power, both personally and professionally.

Forbidden Love at Its Finest The "forbidden" aspect due to their positions adds so much delicious angst. The stakes are incredibly high for both of them if their secret gets out, which only makes their eventual surrender to love feel even more earned and powerful.

Intrigue and World-Building Ana Huang expands on the world of the Twisted series by introducing us to the intricacies of a fictional European monarchy. This adds a refreshing layer of political drama and world-building that distinguishes it from "Twisted Love."

Who Should Read This?

You'll adore "Twisted Games" if you're a fan of:

  • Bodyguard romance

  • Forbidden love and high stakes

  • Royal settings and political intrigue

  • Slow-burn passion that builds to an explosion

  • Strong, resilient heroines and stoic, protective heroes

Final Verdict

"Twisted Games" is a captivating and emotionally rich read that delivers on all fronts. It's a fantastic continuation of the Twisted series, offering a different but equally compelling dynamic. The slow burn between Rhys and Bridget is utterly addictive, and their journey from duty to desire is beautifully written. Get ready to lose yourself in a world of royalty, danger, and undeniable love!

This is another re-read in the Twisted series I gave this book 5 stars on GoodReads but I give this book 6 stars. I loved this book so much i had a hard time starting the third book but I am determined to get through the whole series.

Blog Book Review: Mary by Kelvin V.A. Allison

Are you ready for a quick, emotional gut-punch in your horror reading? If so, Kelvin V.A. Allison's short story, "Mary," might be exactly what you're looking for. This bite-sized Kindle Edition novella

promises to deliver a powerful, unsettling experience in just seven pages. Yes, you read that right – seven pages of pure horror intensity.

A Master of Concise Dread

Kelvin V.A. Allison is no stranger to the horror genre. Known for his prolific output and often extreme narratives, Allison has a knack for crafting stories that dig under your skin. In "Mary," he distills his signature style into a remarkably compact format. Don't let the page count fool you; this isn't a diluted experience. Reviews consistently highlight the story's ability to evoke a strong emotional response, often leaving readers with a lingering sense of "emotional damage." This speaks volumes about Allison's skill in creating psychological impact even within such confined parameters.

What to Expect (Without Spoilers!)

While I won't dive into specific plot points to keep the mystery alive, the general consensus is that "Mary" aims squarely to disquiet and disturb. If you're familiar with Allison's other works, like his "Gomorrah and Sodom" series or novels such as "Apostle," you'll likely recognize his unflinching approach to darker themes and visceral scenarios. For newcomers to his extensive bibliography, "Mary" serves as an excellent entry point, offering a concentrated taste of the raw intensity that defines his horror.

The Power of Brevity

The brevity of "Mary" is arguably its greatest asset. It's perfect for those moments when you crave an immediate jolt of dread but don't have hours to commit to a longer narrative. You can read it in a single sitting, and its impact is designed to be instantaneous. However, if you're a reader who thrives on intricate world-building, deeply developed character arcs, or slow-burn suspense, you might find yourself wishing for more. This story is designed for impact, not expansive narrative.

Final Thoughts: Is "Mary" For You?

In conclusion, "Mary" by Kelvin V.A. Allison is a short, sharp shock of horror. It's a testament to Allison's remarkable ability to evoke profound reactions within a minimalist framework. If you're seeking an emotionally resonant, potentially unsettling, and incredibly quick read that gets right to the heart of fear, then prepare yourself. "Mary" is a compelling, albeit brief, journey into the darker corners of the human psyche, and it proves that sometimes, less is indeed more when it comes to terror. I gave this book 3 stars, I liked it but i wish it was longer and I predicted the plot.

Dive into the Dark Depths: A Review of Ana Huang's 'Twisted Love'

Hey bookworms! 👋

Today, we're kicking off a journey into one of the most talked-about romance series out there: Ana Huang's

Twisted series. And what better place to start than with the book that ignited it all – "Twisted Love", the first thrilling installment!

If you've been on BookTok or just love a good dark romance, chances are you've heard whispers about Alex Volkov. Well, I finally picked up his story, and let me tell you, it's a wild ride.

What's "Twisted Love" All About?

"Twisted Love" introduces us to the enigmatic, ridiculously wealthy, and undeniably dangerous Alex Volkov. He's the kind of guy who could freeze you with a glare and melt you with a touch. His world is all about control, power, and secrets.

Then there's Ava Chen – sweet, vibrant, and a ray of sunshine, despite her own hidden past. She's the best friend's sister, and when her brother goes away, Alex is tasked with protecting her. What starts as a reluctant, almost hostile arrangement quickly morphs into an undeniable, scorching hot attraction that threatens to burn them both.

My Thoughts: The Good, The Broody, and The Burning

The Chemistry? 🔥🔥🔥 Okay, let's just get this out of the way: the chemistry between Alex and Ava is off the charts. Ana Huang knows how to write tension, and every interaction between them crackles. Their push and pull is addictive, and you'll be rooting for Ava to break through Alex's fortress of ice.

The Alpha Hero (with a capital A!) Alex Volkov is the ultimate brooding alpha. He's possessive, protective to an extreme, and scarred by a traumatic past that makes him the way he is. If you love a hero who's a little bit dangerous but secretly gooey for his heroine, Alex is your guy. His journey to softening (just a little!) is compelling.

More Than Just Romance While the romance is definitely the main course, "Twisted Love" isn't just about the steamy scenes. There's a decent dose of suspense and mystery woven into the plot, particularly concerning Alex's shadowy past and the threats that follow him. This adds a nice layer of intrigue and keeps you turning pages to uncover the secrets.

The Sunshine & Grumpy Trope Perfection Ava and Alex embody the "sunshine x grumpy" trope beautifully. Ava's resilience and kindness are the perfect counterpoint to Alex's darkness, creating a dynamic that's both challenging and incredibly rewarding to read.

Who Should Read This?

If you enjoy:

  • Dark romance with a capital D

  • Alpha heroes who are possessive and protective

  • High heat and intense chemistry

  • The "best friend's sister" trope

  • A touch of suspense and mystery

Then "Twisted Love" is definitely worth picking up!

Final Verdict

"Twisted Love" is a powerful start to the Twisted series. It's intense, passionate, and keeps you hooked from beginning to end. Ana Huang delivers on the promise of a thrilling romance with complex characters and a plot that keeps you guessing. Just be prepared for the heat!

5 stars!!!!! This was a re-read for me i started this series in 2024 but never got all the way through it so I’ve decided I’m going to read the whole thing from start to finish.

Your HOA Just Got a Whole Lot More Interesting: A Review of Murder Two Doors Down

Ever felt like your Homeowners Association meetings were a little… intense? Imagine if those intense discussions over paint colors and lawn care suddenly took a murderous turn! That's exactly the brilliant premise behind Chuck Storla's Murder Two Doors Down: An HOA Homicide Mystery, and let me tell you, it's a cozy mystery you won't want to miss.

Welcome to the Neighborhood… of Murder!

Storla takes the seemingly mundane world of suburban HOA life and injects it with a healthy dose of intrigue and, yes, a dead body. The result is a genuinely fresh and incredibly entertaining read that had me smiling, guessing, and sometimes cringing (in the best way) as I recognized familiar HOA archetypes.

The setting itself is a character. Who knew the detailed bylaws, the neighborhood potlucks, and the endless debates over common areas could provide such fertile ground for a homicide? Storla uses the HOA dynamics—the petty power struggles, the unspoken rivalries, the deep-seated resentments—to craft a rich tapestry of motives and suspects. If you've ever had a run-in with an overly enthusiastic HOA president or a neighbor who reports every misplaced recycling bin, you'll feel right at home here.

A Cast of Quirky Characters (and a Reluctant Sleuth)

Our protagonist, who finds themselves unwittingly drawn into the investigation, is utterly relatable. They're not a professional detective, just an ordinary resident trying to navigate the bizarre unwritten rules of their community while simultaneously trying to figure out who killed whom and why. The supporting cast is equally delightful, ranging from the well-meaning but clueless to the outright suspicious, each adding their own flavor to the neighborhood drama. Storla’s characterizations are sharp and often humorous, making it easy to invest in their stories.

A Mystery That Keeps You Hooked

Beyond the charming setting and characters, Murder Two Doors Down delivers a truly engaging mystery. Storla paces the story perfectly, revealing clues and red herrings with a skilled hand. I found myself constantly trying to piece together the puzzle, only to be delightfully surprised by the twists and turns. It's the kind of book where you keep telling yourself, "just one more chapter," until you realize you've devoured half of it in one sitting.

The blend of lighthearted humor with genuine suspense is a delicate balance, and Storla nails it. You'll laugh, you'll ponder, and you'll definitely be entertained.

Final Verdict: Move This to the Top of Your TBR Pile!

If you're a fan of cozy mysteries, enjoy a good laugh, or simply appreciate a novel setting for a whodunit, Murder Two Doors Down: An HOA Homicide Mystery is an absolute must-read. Chuck Storla has crafted a winning formula, proving that sometimes, the most dangerous secrets are hidden just… two doors down.

**I read this Arc copy through NetGalley, The release date is October 14, 2025**

No One Saw Her Go by Sally Royer-Derr – A Masterclass in Psychological Suspense

If you're anything like me, you're constantly on the hunt for that next book that will completely consume your thoughts, keep you up late turning pages, and leave you breathless long after you've read the final word. Look no further, because Sally Royer-Derr's
No One Saw Her Go is precisely that kind of book. Described as "thrilling and addictive psychological suspense," this novel lives up to every promise and then some.

From the very first chapter, Royer-Derr expertly sets a tone of unease and intrigue. The premise itself is chilling: someone vanishes, and the narrative slowly, meticulously unwinds the tangled web of secrets, lies, and hidden motives that surround their disappearance. What makes this book truly stand out in the crowded psychological thriller genre is its masterful pacing and deep dive into the human psyche.

One of the most compelling aspects of No One Saw Her Go is its character development. Royer-Derr doesn't just present characters; she dissects them, revealing their flaws, their hidden fears, and their darkest impulses. You'll find yourself questioning everyone, even those you initially trust, as new information comes to light. This constant re-evaluation of characters creates an immersive reading experience where you feel like an active participant in solving the mystery.

The suspense in this novel isn't reliant on cheap jump scares or gratuitous violence. Instead, it's a slow burn, a creeping dread that builds with each revelation. Royer-Derr utilizes psychological manipulation, unreliable narrators, and a pervasive sense of paranoia to keep you on the edge of your seat. Just when you think you've pieced together the puzzle, a new twist emerges, forcing you to rethink everything you thought you knew. This keeps the "addictive" quality high, as you're constantly driven to uncover the truth.

The writing itself is crisp and evocative, painting vivid scenes without bogging down the narrative. The dialogue feels authentic, and the internal monologues of the characters are particularly effective in building the psychological tension. Royer-Derr understands the nuances of human behavior, and it shines through in every page.

Why You Need to Read This Book:

  • Intricate Plot: The layers of mystery are peeled back with precision, leading to a truly satisfying and surprising climax.

  • Deep Psychological Exploration: If you enjoy thrillers that delve into the minds of their characters, this is for you.

  • Unpredictable Twists: Just when you think you've figured it out, be prepared to be wrong.

  • Pacing Perfection: The suspense builds steadily, making it impossible to put down.

In conclusion, No One Saw Her Go is a triumph of psychological suspense. Sally Royer-Derr has crafted a narrative that is both thrilling and deeply intelligent, proving that she is a force to be reckoned with in the genre. If you're looking for a book that will grip you from start to finish and stay with you long after you've closed its pages, add this to your must-read list immediately. You won't be disappointed.

Unraveling a Dangerous Legacy: "A Murderous Business" by Cathy Pegau

In the bustling, rapidly changing world of 1912, where the lines between ethical business practices and legally ambiguous dealings blur, Cathy Pegau introduces us to a captivating new mystery series with "A Murderous Business: A Harriman & Mancini Mystery." This novel deftly combines historical intrigue with a compelling whodunit, all while spotlighting two extraordinary women determined to forge their own paths.

We meet Margot Baxter Harriman, a woman thrust into the cutthroat world of B&H Foods after the unexpected death of her father. Being a businesswoman in 1912 is no small feat, and Margot is fiercely committed to upholding her family's legacy, no matter the obstacles. Her resolve is immediately tested when she discovers Mrs. Gilroy, her father's former assistant, dead in the office, a half-finished note hinting at "nebulous misdeeds" at B&H clutched in her hand. With her company's reputation and her own freedom at stake, Margot knows she needs discreet help.

Enter Loretta "Rett" Mancini, a sharp, resourceful young woman who has been quietly running her father's private investigation operation as his memory fades. When Margot approaches her, Rett seizes the opportunity to prove her capabilities, plunging headfirst into a scandal that threatens to expose the dark underbelly of B&H Foods.

Pegau truly shines in her character development. Margot is intelligent and driven, navigating a male-dominated world with admirable tenacity. Rett is equally compelling, possessing a keen mind and a willingness to operate outside conventional bounds to uncover the truth. Their partnership is the heart of this story – a fascinating dynamic built on mutual respect and a shared pursuit of justice, even when it leads them into dangerous territory.

The historical setting of 1912 is not merely a backdrop; it's an active participant in the story. Pegau skillfully weaves in the societal constraints faced by women, the burgeoning industrial landscape, and the underlying currents of change in early 20th-century New York. You get a real sense of the challenges Margot faces simply by being a woman in charge, and how Rett's unconventional profession makes her both invaluable and vulnerable.

As Margot and Rett dig deeper, they uncover layers of deceit, blackmail, and corporate malfeasance that extend far beyond what either initially imagined. The stakes escalate with every discovery, making it clear that someone is willing to kill to keep these secrets buried. The suspense builds steadily, keeping you guessing about who is behind the murderous business and just how far they'll go.

"A Murderous Business" is more than just a mystery; it's a testament to female strength, resilience, and the pursuit of truth in a time when those qualities were often undervalued. If you enjoy historical mysteries with strong, intelligent protagonists and a plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat, then the Harriman & Mancini series is one you won't want to miss. Cathy Pegau has crafted a compelling start to what promises to be an excellent series.

Perfect for readers who enjoy:

  • Historical mysteries set in the early 20th century.
  • Stories with strong, intelligent female leads.
  • Intricate plots involving corporate secrets and family legacies.
  • A compelling partnership at the heart of the investigation.

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars – A captivating debut that will leave you eagerly awaiting the next Harriman & Mancini adventure!

More Than Meets the Eye: A Glimpse Into My World

Hey there! If you're reading this, you've stumbled into my little corner of the internet. I'm 29 years old, and my life is a wonderfully messy blend of a lot of different things. Grab your favorite mug (mine's probably overflowing with a meticulously brewed cup of coffee), and let's get a little real. My name is Samantha, but all my friends call me Sam.

Boy Mama Life

First and foremost, I'm a boy mama. To say my days are full of energy, noise, and endless questions about superheroes would be an understatement. From Lego battles to nerf gun wars, my little guys keep me on my toes and reminds me daily of the pure joy and chaos that comes with raising tiny humans. It's a beautiful, messy, and incredibly rewarding journey.

Advocating for Change

Beyond the playground, a significant part of my heart is dedicated to being a homeless advocate. It's a cause that's deeply personal to me. I believe in the inherent dignity of every individual, and I'm committed to doing what I can to support those experiencing homelessness, whether it's through volunteering, raising awareness, or simply offering a kind word. There's so much work to be done, and I'm passionate about being a part of the solution. I am currently working with Homeless voices for Justice, on a new housing project.

The Art of the Bean

If you know me, you know I'm a serious coffee snob. Seriously, don't even talk to me before my morning brew. It's not just a drink; it's a ritual, a moment of calm, and a deep appreciation for the craft. From sourcing ethically traded beans to perfecting my latte art (okay, maybe just my ability to not make a huge mess), I'm all in. You'll often find me seeking out the best local roasters and geeking out over grind sizes.

Navigating the Shadows: My Journey with Depression

Now, for a more vulnerable thread in my tapestry. I'm also someone who is struggling with depression. It's a battle many face in silence, and I believe in speaking openly about it. Some days are brighter than others, and some days it feels like a heavy blanket I can't shake. It's an ongoing journey of self-care, therapy, and learning to be kind to myself, even when my own mind tries to tell me otherwise. If you're also walking this path, know that you're not alone.

Hooked on Yarn

When I need a moment of peace and a creative outlet, you'll find me with a hook and yarn in hand. I'm a dedicated crocheter. There's something incredibly therapeutic about the rhythmic motion of stitching, watching a skein of yarn transform into something beautiful and tangible. From cozy blankets for my boy to wearable art, it's my happy place and a wonderful way to de-stress.

Why Start a Blog? Because Books!

So, why am I finally putting pen to digital paper (or, well, fingers to keyboard)? The biggest reason is that I'm a lifelong book lover. For me, books are more than just stories; they're portals to other worlds, companions through every season of life, and constant sources of inspiration.

I want this space to be where I can share my latest reads, talk about the books that have moved me, and connect with other book lovers. Whether you're into fantasy, smutty romances, thrilling mysteries, or heartwarming contemporary tales, I hope you'll find something here that sparks your interest.

I'm excited to embark on this new chapter with you, sharing bits of my life, my love for books, and everything in between.

What's the one book that changed your perspective, and why? I'd love to hear about it in the comments!
