Just when you think you have a handle on the story, Maya's testimony twists, leaving you to question everything. What is she hiding? What is she leaving out?

So when I scored an early copy of Isabelle Engel's Most Eligible from NetGalley, I basically sprinted to my reading nook.

The premise? Pure gold. Our heroine, Georgia Rose, isn't there for the roses—she's on a mission to expose

the whole dating show machine for a juicy exposé. But then, enter stage right: Rhett Auburn, the country singer host who just happens to be her one-night stand from a year ago. Seriously, how do you not immediately need to know what happens next? The book absolutely sizzles when Georgia and Rhett are sharing these heated, secret moments away from the cameras. Their chemistry is electric, and it was the main reason I couldn't put the book down.

But here's the honest truth, and why it's a solid 3-star read for me. While the premise is brilliant, some of the plot beats felt like I'd seen them on an episode of my favorite dating show already. I was just hoping for a bit more originality in the twists and turns. I also found myself wishing the book had lingered longer on the emotional fallout and character development. The ending felt a little rushed, and I wasn't quite ready to say goodbye to Georgia and Rhett just yet.

That book had me on the edge of my seat, gasping, and completely enthralled from start to finish – a solid 5-star read in my book! So, naturally, when I heard about the sequel, The Next Mrs. Parrish, I was beyond excited. Could it possibly capture that same magic?

Well, after devouring it, I'm here to share my thoughts. While it wasn't a bad book by any means, it just didn't quite hook me the way the first one did. My rating for The Next Mrs. Parrish landed at a respectable 3 stars.

The Plot Thickens (Again!)

For those who need a refresher or are new to the series (though I highly recommend starting with book one!), The Next Mrs. Parrish dives back into the treacherous waters of Bishops Harbor. We find Amber Patterson Parrish still basking in her socialite glow, despite her husband Jackson's recent tax-evasion scandal. But her gilded cage is about to get a lot smaller. Jackson is getting out of prison, and with his release, Amber's carefully constructed world – and her money – is rapidly shrinking.

Meanwhile, Daphne Parrish, Jackson's ex-wife, swore she'd never return to Bishops Harbor. But when her daughter runs away, desperate to see her father, Daphne finds herself back in the lion's den. Jackson claims he's a changed man, but Daphne, having lived through his manipulations, knows better than to trust him.

And just when you think things can't get more complicated, a ghost from Amber's past emerges, seeking revenge. This forces Amber, Daphne, and even Jackson into a bizarre, uneasy alliance. The central question becomes: who is playing whom? It's a zero-sum game, and everyone's fighting tooth and nail for what little they have left.

What Worked (and Why It's Still Worth a Read!)

Even though it didn't hit 5 stars for me, The Next Mrs. Parrish still delivers on many fronts. Liv Constantine is a master of duplicity and betrayal, and this book is packed with it. There are indeed some shocking turns that will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about the characters. The authors excel at crafting complex, often morally ambiguous characters, and watching Amber and Daphne navigate their new, forced dynamic is certainly "entertaining." If you love a good cat-and-mouse game, you'll find plenty to enjoy here. The core premise of these three characters being forced to align against a common enemy is genuinely intriguing.

Why It Didn't Quite Grab Me Like the First

So, why the 3-star rating when the first was a perfect 5? For me, The Last Mrs. Parrish had an unparalleled sense of freshness and a truly jaw-dropping twist that left me reeling. It was a novel that redefined "unreliable narrator" for me. In The Next Mrs. Parrish, while the twists are present and the characters are still compelling, that initial "wow" factor wasn't quite as strong. It felt a little less groundbreaking, and perhaps some of the suspense didn't build with the same intensity. It was a good read, but it didn't have that relentless, "I can't put this down" grip that its predecessor commanded. It just didn't leave me quite as "hooked."

I recently had the chance to listen to this on Audible, and it was an absolutely thrilling experience. I rated this book 4/5 stars, because I genuinely loved it and couldn't stop thinking about it after the final chapter.

The Story: A Secret, a Crash, and a Boy She Can't Forget

The premise of this book is what initially drew me in, and it's a fantastic hook. Here's a quick rundown from the synopsis:

Shelby is nervous to start her senior year after spending the whole summer away from home. After all, it's hard to be carefree when you're trying to protect a secret.

Shelby was in a devastating car accident, and everyone in town thinks that she was undergoing more physical therapy in Denver. Instead, Shelby's mother enrolled her in a clinical program to stop the panic attacks that started after the crash. The treatment erased Shelby's memory of the accident, but she can't help feeling as if a piece of herself is missing, that the treatment took more than the doctors claimed.

So when Shelby starts hallucinating a boy with dark and mysterious eyes, she knows it must be a side-effect of the clinical program. Except you can't kiss hallucinations. And this boy insists that they know each other and are in love...

What a setup, right? The story is a masterful blend of mystery, romance, and psychological suspense. You're immediately pulled into Shelby's world as she tries to piece together her past while grappling with a reality that feels more and more like a lie.

Why I Loved This Book

Remember Me Always grabbed my attention and held it tight. The central mystery of the car crash and what truly happened is so compelling. I was constantly trying to figure out the truth alongside Shelby, and the twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat. The suspense is perfectly balanced, making you question everything you and Shelby are told.

The audiobook format was particularly effective for this story. The duel narrator's performances perfectly captured Shelby's confusion, fear, and growing hope. Listening to her inner monologue as she struggles to distinguish between reality and her "hallucinations" was incredibly immersive. The emotional weight of the story, especially the intense connection between Shelby and the boy, was beautifully conveyed through the narration.

The romance in this book is the beating heart of the story. The love between Shelby and the boy is powerful, not just because of the mystery surrounding their connection, but because of the way it's portrayed. It's a love that transcends memory, a deep-seated feeling that she can't explain but can't deny. This kind of "remembering" is what made the story so special for me. It's a powerful statement about the nature of love and identity.

Final Verdict

I gave Remember Me Always four stars because it was a thrilling, emotional, and captivating ride from start to finish. This sweet and spicy read is part of the Peach Blossom series, and it's a perfect pick-me-up.

It's a journey about finding love and learning to make space for yourself, even when you're busy juggling everything else.

My Thoughts: A Fun and Charming Read

I really enjoyed my time with this book, which I've rated $\star \star \star$. For me, a three-star rating means I had a great time reading it, but it didn't completely blow me away—and that's totally okay! This book is exactly what it promises to be: a fun, low-angst, feel-good romance.

The chemistry between Dani and Zoey is fantastic. Karmen Lee writes their connection with a palpable warmth that makes you root for them from the very first page. The audiobook format was particularly engaging, as the narration brought out the personalities of these two women beautifully, making their sweet and spicy moments feel even more real.

I also loved the small-town setting and the focus on the surrounding community. The family and friendship dynamics add a wonderful layer of depth to the romance, making it feel grounded and authentic. It's a story that celebrates finding love not just in a partner, but in the life you've built for yourself.

Why Three Stars?

So, why the three stars instead of four or five? While I loved the characters and their romance, some of the plot points felt a bit predictable. The central conflict, while well-intentioned, followed a familiar path that didn't offer many surprises. The pacing, at times, felt a little quick, and I would have loved to spend more time exploring some of the emotional beats. For me, these elements held it back from being an absolute favorite, but they didn't detract from my overall enjoyment.

As a long-time fan of psychological thrillers, getting the opportunity to read an advanced copy is always a treat. A huge thank you to NetGalley for providing me with the ARC of Clare Mackintosh's latest novel, Other People's Houses. Having just finished it, I can confidently say this is a book you'll want to add to your list. It's a solid 4-star read that delivers on suspense, intrigue, and a compelling mystery.

Behind the Facade

The story takes place in two different locations, each with its own brand of mystery. In the affluent Cheshire neighborhood of The Hill, someone is methodically breaking into homes. DS Leo Brady is on the case, but he quickly realizes this isn't a typical smash-and-grab. The burglar seems to be searching for something, or

someone, very specific.

Meanwhile, just across the border, DC Ffion Morgan is faced with a shocking discovery: the body of an estate agent floating in a lake. Ffion knows that estate agents aren't always the most popular people, but who would have hated this one enough to kill them?

The genius of this book lies in how these two separate cases, and two very different detectives, are brought together. As Leo and Ffion's paths cross, they uncover a web of secrets that proves people will go to extreme lengths to protect their carefully constructed lives.

My 4-Star Verdict

What makes this book so good is its relentless pacing and clever construction. The narrative keeps you engaged, constantly feeding you just enough information to piece things together—or so you think. The twists and turns are well-earned, and Mackintosh does a fantastic job of keeping the tension high.

I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between the two main characters. Leo and Ffion are a great pairing; their distinct personalities and investigative styles play off each other perfectly, making their collaboration both interesting and fun to read. The supporting cast is equally well-drawn, adding depth to the story and keeping the reader invested in every outcome.

I rated it four stars because, while the mystery is compelling and the execution is superb, a couple of the smaller plot points were a little predictable for me. However, this is a minor quibble and certainly didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the book. The journey to the final reveal is so well-handled that the destination, even if a little anticipated, is still incredibly satisfying.

Should You Read It?

If you're a fan of psychological thrillers, police procedurals, or just a good old-fashioned mystery, then yes, you absolutely should pick up Other People's Houses.
