Book Club, Crushes, and a Small-Town Happily Ever After: A Review of The Secret Crush Book Club

Hey bookworms!

I recently had the pleasure of diving into a delightful new romance, and I'm so excited to share my thoughts with you all. I got the chance to listen to an advanced review copy of the audiobook for The Secret Crush Book Club (Peach Blossom, book #3) by Karmen Lee, courtesy of NetGalley. This sweet and spicy read is part of the Peach Blossom series, and it's a perfect pick-me-up.

The Story: A Single Mom and a Secretive Librarian

The book's synopsis sets the stage perfectly:

A dedicated single mother and a librarian with a secret write their own sweet and sexy love story in this small-town rom-com about family, friendships and embracing the next chapter.

For Dani, life is a juggling act. As a single mom devoted to her son and family, she barely has a moment to herself. But when her sister announces she’s moving out of the house, the ache of loneliness creeps in, and Dani can’t help but wonder if there’s something else she’s been missing in her life…

Zoey came to Peach Blossom eager to start her new job as the town’s librarian and do a little research for her next book. Yet she never expected to find inspiration in fellow book club member Dani, whose captivating brown eyes tell a story of their own. Before they know it,

lingering glances over their favorite fiction turn into first dates and sizzling nights.

This premise immediately drew me in. Who doesn't love a good book club meet-cute? The story follows Dani and Zoey as they navigate their growing feelings, personal secrets, and the vibrant small-town life in Peach Blossom. It's a journey about finding love and learning to make space for yourself, even when you're busy juggling everything else.

My Thoughts: A Fun and Charming Read

I really enjoyed my time with this book, which I've rated . For me, a three-star rating means I had a great time reading it, but it didn't completely blow me away—and that's totally okay! This book is exactly what it promises to be: a fun, low-angst, feel-good romance.

The chemistry between Dani and Zoey is fantastic. Karmen Lee writes their connection with a palpable warmth that makes you root for them from the very first page. The audiobook format was particularly engaging, as the narration brought out the personalities of these two women beautifully, making their sweet and spicy moments feel even more real.

I also loved the small-town setting and the focus on the surrounding community. The family and friendship dynamics add a wonderful layer of depth to the romance, making it feel grounded and authentic. It's a story that celebrates finding love not just in a partner, but in the life you've built for yourself.

Why Three Stars?

So, why the three stars instead of four or five? While I loved the characters and their romance, some of the plot points felt a bit predictable. The central conflict, while well-intentioned, followed a familiar path that didn't offer many surprises. The pacing, at times, felt a little quick, and I would have loved to spend more time exploring some of the emotional beats. For me, these elements held it back from being an absolute favorite, but they didn't detract from my overall enjoyment.

Who Should Read This?

If you're a fan of Black sapphic romance, small-town settings, and low-angst rom-coms, this book is for you. It's a perfect read for when you need something heartwarming and charming to lift your spirits. If you've enjoyed the other books in the Peach Blossom series, you'll definitely want to pick this one up!
