Unearthing the Past: My 5-Star Review of Jill Lynn's Things We Keep Hidden

Hey Bookworms!!

Sometimes you read a book that just stays with you, a story that grips you from the very first page and doesn't let go until the shocking conclusion. Jill Lynn's Things We Keep Hidden is one of those books. I had the pleasure of listening to an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) audiobook through NETGALLEY, and I can honestly say I couldn't get enough. I was genuinely sad when it ended, which is why this incredible book easily earned a five-star rating from me.

The Premise: Friendship and a Fateful Secret

The story centers on three lifelong friends: Payton, Isley, and Clara. For more than twenty years, they’ve held onto a secret, the unspoken weight of which has subtly shaped their lives since their friend Cece

tragically took her own life. A reunion at Isley's Breckenridge vacation home, meant to be a time of healing and connection, quickly turns into a tense confrontation. It's here that a mysterious and threatening note appears, throwing their fragile peace into chaos:

"Tell the truth or I will."

This cryptic message ignites a firestorm of fear and suspicion. Is the note about the truth they've buried for decades? Or is it tied to the new, personal struggles each woman has brought with her?

Layers of Intrigue and Emotion

What makes Things We Keep Hidden so compelling is the way Jill Lynn weaves together the central mystery with the personal dramas of the main characters. Each woman is grappling with her own set of problems, and these individual struggles add a rich layer of complexity to the narrative.

  • Isley is wrestling with a reckless act of her own, spurred by the turmoil of her son's stay in rehab.

  • Clara, the most careful and rule-abiding of the three, is haunted by one single, defining moment where she broke her own code.

  • Payton is in denial about the true state of her marriage and her husband's so-called "plan" for their future.

These personal stories make the characters feel incredibly real and relatable. You feel invested not just in solving the overarching mystery, but in seeing each of them find their way through their individual crises. The suspense builds masterfully, and with every chapter, you're left guessing who the note is for and what secret will finally be exposed.

A Friendship Tested

At its heart, this is a story about friendship—the kind that can withstand decades, but also the kind that can be shattered by a single, hidden truth. The tension and fear caused by the note force the women to re-examine the bonds they share and confront the painful challenges that have shaped them. As the weekend progresses, the walls they've built up start to crumble, and a powerful, shocking truth is revealed that changes everything they thought they knew.

A Must-Read for Fans of Suspense and Character-Driven Stories

Things We Keep Hidden is a brilliant blend of emotional depth and gripping suspense. Jill Lynn has crafted a story that is not only a thrilling mystery but also a poignant exploration of how the secrets we keep—and the lies we tell to protect them—can define our lives. The writing is superb, the pacing is perfect, and the ending is an absolute knockout.

If you love a good whodunit that is also deeply rooted in complex character relationships and the power of friendship, this book is for you. I highly recommend picking it up; just be prepared to lose a few hours, because you won't want to put it down.
