Today, I'm absolutely thrilled to share my thoughts on a recent listen that completely captured my heart: "To Sketch a Scandal" by Jess Everlee. As an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) I received from NetGalley, I had the pleasure of experiencing this historical romance in its glorious audiobook form, and let me tell you, it was an absolute treat for the ears!
Why the Audiobook Format is a Must for This One!
First things first, if you're considering diving into "To Sketch a Scandal," I wholeheartedly recommend the audiobook. A truly great narrator can transform a good book into an unforgettable experience, and that's
precisely what happened here. The voice artist (while I won't name them specifically, as ARC narrators can sometimes change) brought such life and nuance to Jess Everlee's already sparkling prose.
Character Voices: Each character felt distinct and vibrant. Lady Eleanor "Nora" Finch's spirited wit truly shone through, and Lord Ashworth's initially reserved, then surprisingly charming, demeanor was perfectly conveyed.
Pacing and Tone: The narration perfectly matched the book's tone – witty, romantic, and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny. The pacing allowed the clever banter to land beautifully, and the more tender moments felt genuinely heartfelt.
Immersion: I found myself completely lost in Regency London, picturing every scene and feeling every emotion, thanks to the engaging delivery. It made my commutes and chores fly by!
The Scandalous Premise (No Major Spoilers!)
"To Sketch a Scandal" introduces us to the wonderfully unconventional Lady Eleanor "Nora" Finch. By day, she's a lady of society; by night, she's a secret caricaturist, sketching scandalous (and often hilarious) depictions of London's elite under a pseudonym. Her latest target? The notoriously private and rather formidable Lord Ashworth.
Ashworth is a man shrouded in mystery, and Nora's artistic curiosity (and perhaps a touch of mischief) leads her to try and unmask the real man behind the rumors. But as fate (and a few comical mishaps) throws them together, Nora begins to realize that the aloof lord is far more complex, and far more captivating, than she ever imagined. Their journey from wary adversaries to something much deeper is a delightful dance of wit, misunderstanding, and undeniable chemistry.
What I Adored About This Story:
Witty Banter: Oh, the dialogue! Jess Everlee is a master of witty exchanges, and Nora and Ashworth's verbal sparring is pure gold. It's sharp, intelligent, and laugh-out-loud funny.
Compelling Characters: Nora is a heroine you can truly root for – intelligent, independent, and with a secret passion that makes her incredibly relatable. Ashworth, on the other hand, is the perfect blend of stoic charm and hidden vulnerability. Their individual journeys and their journey together are equally engaging.
Artistic Flair: The unique premise of a secret caricaturist adds such a fun and fresh layer to the historical romance genre. It's fascinating to see how Nora's art intertwines with her personal life and the unfolding scandal.
Heartfelt Romance: Beyond the humor and the intrigue, there's a truly tender and satisfying romance at the core of this book. The slow-burn build-up is incredibly rewarding.
